What is Old Tokaido Shukuba-machi?
The old Tokaido Highway is the road connecting Nihonbashi Bridge and Sanjo Ohashi Bridge in Kyoto, which was built by Ieyasu Tokugawa in the Edo period (1603-1868). The road was used by many people and goods, and in order to facilitate the smooth distribution of goods, 53 inns were established and lodging facilities were set up to improve convenience. Even today, some of the 53 inn towns still retain the streetscapes and traditions of those days, and continue to attract many people.
