It&#8217;s a town with that perfect balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article gives a broad overview of Narumi-juku&#8217;s history and highlights, while casually pointing out spots worth seeing during your visit. Finally, we&#8217;ll also cover the neighboring Arimatsu district\u2014an area designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Enjoy exploring both Narumi and Arimatsu along the Tokaido Road as a set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"swell-block-fullWide pc-py-60 sp-py-40 alignfull\"><div class=\"swell-block-fullWide__inner l-article\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left is-style-default\"><strong>What&#8217;s Narumi-juku like?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Narumi-juku served as the gateway to Owari Province during the Edo period, a place steeped in history with numerous ancient shrines, temples, and castle ruins nearby. Along the T\u014dkaid\u014d highway, inns and teahouses lined the streets, bustling with travelers resting, transferring luggage, and the constant flow of people passing through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Post towns have a unique \u201catmosphere,\u201d not just in their individual buildings. Narumi-juku is no exception. With its slopes and slightly narrow streets, just walking through it gives you that feeling of imagining, \u201cSo this is what traveling back then must have been like?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I didn&#8217;t really feel much when I first started visiting T\u014dkaid\u014d post towns either\ud83d\udca6<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I&#8217;ve gradually gotten to enjoy the atmosphere of these post towns more and more lol<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A little bit about history<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The name Narumi-juku appears in Heian period texts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was formally established as a post station in the early Edo period. The Owari Tokugawa clan treated it as a crucial point along the highway, leading to the town&#8217;s gradual growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This area saw significant activity during the Warring States period too. In fact, there was a castle here called Narumi Castle. It was also deeply connected to the Battle of Okehazama, making it a spot that gets history buffs saying \u201cOh!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For travelers heading to Edo, Narumi-juku offered the comforting proximity of \u201cjust a little further to the next post station, Miyasuku.\u201d This sense of distance is said to have contributed to its moderate prosperity as a post station. In modern terms, it might be akin to a \u201cquiet town just before a highway service area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Places to Visit in Narumi-juku<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Former Site of Seikai Shrine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The current Narumi Shrine is located a short distance away, but this original shrine site was its ancient location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2193Current Narumi Shrine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/narumi-jinja.or.jp\/\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Just knowing \u201cit was here\u201d makes you feel the layers of history. Known as a castle attacked by Oda Nobunaga, it is now maintained as a park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When visiting castle ruins, one tends to focus on whether stone walls remain, but here, the terrain itself tells the story. That place is \u201cArimatsu.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This town is like Narumi&#8217;s partner, having flourished rapidly during the Edo period thanks to its shibori dyeing industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the Arimatsu district is designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just gazing at the lined-up buildings, you&#8217;ll feel, \u201cWow&#8230; this is just like Edo&#8230;\u201d The preservation of the townscape is that remarkable. The color of the walls, the angle of the roofs, the low eaves. As you walk around, you can still sense the everyday life of the locals, and that balance is just perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori Hall<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you think of Arimatsu, you think of \u201cArimatsu shibori.\u201d &#8230;Sorry, I didn&#8217;t know that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This facility lets you experience its culture and techniques firsthand. You can see exhibits on the history of shibori, try the process yourself, and watch artisans&#8217; skills up close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looks like they hold workshops twice a day. It&#8217;s absolutely fantastic!
