Each post town along the T\u014dkaid\u014d has its own story, doesn’t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Towns nestled against mountains, towns that lived alongside rivers, towns that flourished as castle towns…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve visited many post towns, but this time it’s Miyajuku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above all, Miyajuku is the gateway town to Atsuta Shrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was also the starting point for the \u201cShichiri Ferry,\u201d connecting Kuwana\u2014one of the largest shrines along the T\u014dkaid\u014d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, land travel switched to sea travel, making it a vital transportation hub of its time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Shichiri Ferry (Shichiri no Watashi) was a sea route between Miyasuku (Atsuta Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture), known for being one of the Fifty-Three Stations of the T\u014dkaid\u014d, and Kuwanayado (Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture), serving as an official road in the past. Often, the term \u201cShichiri Ferry\u201d specifically refers only to the ferry landing on the Miyasuku side or the Kuwanayado side of this crossing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although land routes were available during the Edo period, travelers deliberately chose the sea route despite its cost and maritime risks to shorten their journey time. As described later, the alternate route avoiding the sea was the Saya Kaido branch road, but it required a full day’s travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time, we’ll introduce Miyasuku as a leisurely walking journey that includes the \u201cOld Tokaido\u201d and \u201cYobitsugi to Yamazaki\u201d areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’ve woven in historical tales and photo spots to make it a quick and easy read, so please enjoy it as if you were taking a stroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kind of place is Miyajuku? \u2014 A post town protected by the sea and the shrine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 41st station along the T\u014dkaid\u014d was Miyajuku. For travelers walking from Edo, this was the \u201cGateway to the Sea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those coming from the Kyoto direction, it served as a sort of \u201ccorridor\u201d where they would visit Atsuta Shrine before returning to the main road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miyasuku truly flourished during the Edo period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially after the Shichiri Ferry was established, it bustled with travelers, goods, peddlers, and pilgrims heading to Ise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boats departed in pairs as a rule. Amidst tides and seasonal changes affecting navigation, many people challenged the sea here\u2014truly the \u201chighlight of the journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The post station itself seems to have been quite large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was one of the largest towns along the T\u014dkaid\u014d. You can clearly see it was a town with all three elements: a temple town, a port town, and a post town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Digging a Little Deeper into History \u2014 The Origins of Miyasuku and the Meaning of \u201cYozoku\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The origin of Miyasuku lies, after all, in the existence of Atsuta Shrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Since ancient times, it has been a center for \u201cprayer\u201d and \u201cpolitics,\u201d and by the Yamato period, it seems it had already become a key transportation hub connecting the eastern provinces with Yamato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The areas spreading southward, like \u201cYobitsugi\u201d and \u201cYamazaki,\u201d were also important thoroughfares since ancient times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    By the Kamakura period, the Kamakura Highway (Kamakura Okan) already passed through, bustling with samurai traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Furthermore, during the Warring States period, it was a tense border road where the forces of the Imagawa and Oda clans met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That’s why this entire area…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Walking not just through Miyajuku but throughout this \u201cYobitsugi-Yamazaki area\u201d gives you a sudden sense of clarity about the background of the highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yamasaki’s Nagasaka Monument<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      A simple stone monument stands on the long slope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      True to its name, it marks the \u201clong slope\u201d (Nagasaka), clearly showing how this area was once a difficult passage for travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A spot where the city’s bustle fades a little, and the feeling of an ancient road suddenly grows stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This is what you might call an old intersection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It’s a spot that gets history buffs a little excited\u2014where the Kamakura Kaid\u014d, the main route of the Kamakura period, meets the old T\u014dkaid\u014d, Edo’s main artery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Boundary between the former Imagawa domain and the former Oda domain<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      During the Warring States period, this area was apparently right on the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The boundary between eastern Owari, under the control of the Imagawa clan, and central Owari, the Oda family’s stronghold, lay near here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Now it’s just a quiet residential neighborhood, but it was once a tense frontline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      When I actually stepped foot here, it felt kind of scary. Though I admit I’m a bit of a scaredy-cat, haha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Old T\u014dkaid\u014d Road Marker (From Here Northward)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      A road marker clearly indicating the region’s name, a remnant of the \u201cgentle highway guidance\u201d offered to travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The carving of the characters and the stone’s texture are superb, making it a photogenic spot. It’s been called \u201cYobitsuki\u201d since ancient times, you know~<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Inariyama Ch\u014draku-ji Temple<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The temple made a sudden, striking appearance, its row of red torii gates leaving a vivid impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Deeply connected to Inari worship, travelers of old may have stopped here to pray for safe passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      From here, one could reach the boundary between the former Imagawa and Oda domains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Denmacho Mile Marker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The 41st milestone from Edo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Now preserved as a stone monument, this spot once held a \u201croad marker\u201d that helped travelers gauge distances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Just before entering Miyasuku, this is where the town’s atmosphere grows distinctly thicker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Site of the Saitan Bridge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      A location where important bridges spanned the land from the Warring States period through the Edo period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      While there are various theories about the origin of its name, one suggests a nearby \u201cplace for sorting goods,\u201d revealing it was a junction for transportation and logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      K\u014dshuku Site of the Southern Family of the Akimoto Clan<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The symbol of Miyajuku’s center is this red honjin, the Nanbu family residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Honjin served as \u201cVIP lodgings,\u201d where daimyo, court nobles, and shogunate officials stayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The Nanbu family’s honjin is said to have been particularly prestigious even within Miyajuku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Now, only a sign remains. Honjin sites often seem to be just signs, don’t they? \ud83d\ude2d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Miyano Watashi Park<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      When it comes to Miyajuku, you simply can’t miss this spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The departure point for the Tokaido’s only sea route, the \u201cShichiri Ferry,\u201d is what is now Miyano Watashi Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      What is Shichiri Ferry?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Walking the T\u014dkaid\u014d from Edo, the overland route ends at Miyajuku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      From there to Kuwanajuku lies the \u201csea route\u201d\u2014a journey of about 7 ri (approximately 28 km) by boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This route held its own \u201cdrama of sea travel,\u201d distinct from the overland path: departure times varied with wave conditions and tides, and poor weather could cancel crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      For travelers of that era, this place must have felt like the gateway to both tension and excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The appeal as a park<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The current park is a tranquil space featuring a boat landing, an information monument, a nightlight, and rest areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The area near the boat landing is especially photogenic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The shimmering water, the silhouettes of boats, and the vastness of Atsuta’s sky combine to instantly heighten that sense of travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It may not be flashy as a tourist spot, but thinking \u201cThis is where they set out to sea\u201d makes it a truly heartwarming place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Atsuta Shrine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Last but certainly not least is Atsuta Shrine, the very heart of Miyajuku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Why is it so important?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Atsuta Shrine is one of Japan’s foremost ancient shrines, enshrining the Kusanagi Sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It holds a status rivaling that of Ise Shrine and has been revered since ancient times as the \u201ccenter of politics and prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      For travelers along the T\u014dkaid\u014d highway, the standard practice was \u201cUpon arriving at Miyasuku, first pay homage at Atsuta,\u201d making it a central destination for both sightseeing and religious devotion along the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Warriors like Nobunaga and Ieyasu also paid their respects here, and it was cherished as a place to make prayers before battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The Charm of the Temple Grounds<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The moment you step into the temple grounds, the air changes completely, and the scent of the forest suddenly grows stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That feeling is just irresistible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        No matter where you take photos, pictures at Atsuta Shrine turn out incredibly picturesque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
